About: The Modhera Sun Temple is the most important of all sun-temples built in the whole of Gujarat. This temple is solely dedicated to the solar deity Surya and is located at the Modhera village of Mehsana district,  Gujarat,  India. The Modhera Sun Temple was built during the reign of Bhima 1 of the Chalukya dynasty in 1026-27 AD. It is situated on the bank of the river Pushpavati. The remains of this magnificent architectural monument still reflect the glimpses of elegance and testify the sanctity of the site. No worship is offered here now since it has been declared as the Monument of National Importance and is maintained by Archaeological Survey of India.

History: The place was later known as Sitanichauri and Ramakund locally as the temple has its Legendary part related to the epic Ramayana. As has happened with other temples in India this temple also suffered from the fundamental ravages. This beautiful monument has been constructed in accordance with the shilpasastra. It is a monument of incomparable beauty.

Architecture: The whole structure is standing on Kharasila which is the basement that consists of 'Garbharga' which is the shrines and 'Guha-Mandapa’ which is the hall,  a 'Sabha-Mandapa’ or 'Ranga-Mandapa’ which is the assembly hall/ theatre hall and is locally known as Sitachavadi. There is a Kunda( the scared pot) in front of the temple and it is now called as Ramakunda. Initially , there were some small subsidiary shrines, which have been destroyed.

The temple is easily reachable. There are buses and taxis available to reach Modhera. It is open on all days of the week From 6.00 am to 6.00 pm.
