Mythology:- Hidimba Devi was born into a rakshas family and one of the characters of the great Indian epic – The Mahabharath. She was Bhima’s (one of the Pandava’s) wife. The temple is built at the site where Hidimba Devi meditated in bygone days. She vowed to marry the person who dared to defeat her strong and protective brother Hidimb. During the exile, Bhima encountered Hidimb and defeated him in the fight. So as per her vows, Hidimba Devi married Bhima and gave birth to a boy child who was named Ghatothkach.

History:-The Hidimba Devi temple was built in 1553 by Raja Bahadur Singh. It is one of the most religious sites of Manali situated amidst the cedar forests which makes the place peaceful and extremely beautiful. It is built around a cave and it’s sanctum is covered by four tiered Pagoda roofs. In all other states, while Goddess Durga is worshipped and offered prayers during Navaratri, only in Manali, the Hidimba Devi temple is filled with devotees offering special pooja and prayers. There is always crowd in the temple but it increases dramatically during the days of Navaratri.

Architecture:- The beautifully carved wooden doors of this temple have intricate designs of Goddess Durga. There is 24m tall shikhar or tower above the sanctuary which consist of three square roofs of timber tiles and a fourth brass cone-shaped roof at the top. There is a gigantic rock inside the temple and only a 3inch tall brass image of Goddess Hidimba Devi. It is a very peaceful place and the stunning scenery from the temple is worth a visit.

During summers to the start of winters, the climate remains comfortable and this is the best season to visit the temple.
