About: Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple is an architectural phenomenon that is recounting the cultural heritage of India. It is one of the large Hindu temple complexes in Gujarat. It is a beautiful shrine located right at the heart of Gandhinagar. Akshardham is a predecessor to Akshardham at Delhi,  the temple was constructed by the same organisation BAPS inspired by Pramukh Swami, the former head of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. This thirteen years old temple was inaugurated on November 1992 by Pramukh Swami himself, the promoter of BAPS.

The sacred place embraces a seven feet tall, poise image of Lord Swaminarayan. Hari Mandapam, Praradi Mandapam and Vibhuti Mandapam are the three different floors. These floors are where people engage in selfless service to lord. The main intention of these programs was to acknowledge people with the philosophy of Lord Swaminarayan while the aim of BAPS is to educate people about the beautiful cultures and rich spiritual roots of India. The temple has three exhibition halls 'Sahajanand', 'Sat-Chit-Anand' and 'Nityanand' to enlighten the visitors on spiritual levels by the silence and peace which is restored within them.

Architecture: Akshardham is an architectural masterwork and was constructed by consuming about 6000 pink sandstone imported from Rajasthan. It took thirteen years to for the temple to take its complete form. The arcade to this shrine is precisely 1,751 feet in its length. The magnificent structure is about 108 feet tall in height,  240 feet in length and 131 feet in width. It has The great temple is dedicated to the divine adobe Swaminarayan. The followers believe that a soul goes to Akshardham after attaining moksha. The followers of BAPS consider and worship Swaminarayan as God almighty.

Even the home of God could not escape from the terrorist menace. On September 24, 2002, the temple was attacked by two armed men killing 33 people and injuring 70. But soon the Indian National security guard intervened and ended the siege by killing those two terrorists. After a prayer assembly led by Pramukh Swami for the departed souls and families and for the peace and harmony which was attend by 30,000 people , the temple was reopened after 14 days of the attack.

Tourism and culture: The Swaminarayan Akshardham has become one of the major and popular attraction amongst the devotees and tourists. It is a wonderful encouragement to art, culture and value of India. No steel or iron is used in the beautiful temple for long lasting of the monument. It exhibits the borderless culture and growing art of India. The Swaminarayan Akshardham temple is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 9.30am- 7.30pm and is closed on every Monday. One can reach the temple by easily available buses, auto-rickshaws or any other local transport from Gandhinagar.
